Masuku update #2 – Preparing for burial

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Everything is different here in Swaziland, death and the celebration of death is no exception. Early Saturday morning Jabulani, Sherri, Mark and I will drive down to pay our respects to Sarah and her family. They have all taken refuge at the family homestead and will stay there through the burial time on Tuesday.  The body will remain at the funeral home until MOnday when it must be picked up with the parents and other elders from the homestead.  No one in the family owns a vehicle so we have the honor (not sure if that is the right word) of meeting this group of mourners at the morgue and driving this precious child to her resting place in the south of Swaziland.  The body will takes its place in the family living room.  The casket will be open for a time and then closed for the vigil. Friends, family, pastors and guests will come to the family home at 9PM and mourn, sing, pray until 3AM when tea is served.  Following that, the mourning and wailing continues until dawn when we walk the tiny coffin to the hole in the ground.  When the service is finished and the grave filled be filled by hand in front of us and then a complete meal is served to all who are in attendance – a feast of sorts with chicken, rice, pap and veggies.  Enough to bankrupt an already financially broke family.

The sad thing is that next week, or tomorrow when another family member dies, it begins all over again. I will try to write each day here to tell the story.  Thanks for joining me on this sad road.

Masuku update #1 – A tragic death of a little child

Friday, May 7th, 2010

It is with a broken heart that I am writing to share news of our beloved Masuku family.  Earlier today there was a terrible accident and the support that was holding up a 5,000 L water tank collapsed under the weight of the water being put in it and killed little Gcinile Masuku.  She is the female twin in the purple shirt, front and center of this photo.  For those of you who never met the family in person, a photo of Gcinile at age one can be seen in IT’S NOT OKAY WITH ME.  She was age 4 in the photo in IS IT OKAY WITH YOU?  She would have been six this year.  After the accident she was rushed to the hospital in Manzini by two of our team members, but she passed away 5 minutes before arriving at the office, in their arms.

I will fly to Swaziland arriving Friday night to help the family prepare. Will try to post an update here.  Thanks for your prayers.

Moving the Junk Yard kids to a place of HOPE in Swaziland

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Janine in SwazilandThis note is being written with a very excited, yet heavy heart. When I first met the “junk yard kids” in 2005 I never imagined that I could be a part of having a lasting effect on their lives. The visits, delivery of food, beds, prayers, clothes, school fees and supplies, love and overall support seemed like they would never be enough to help this family out of the cycle of poverty. Our hope and prayer has been to move them out of that dangerous situation, but I didn’t think the day would ever come. I sat with Sarah and visited for more than two hours in February. It was surreal. Just chatting woman to woman, mother to mother, human to human. Not black to white, rich to poor, Christian to non-Christian, just people, children of the living God.

I asked her what her biggest challenges were at the time and she poured out her heart. They included:

- her “husband” (father of the children who refused to marry her after fathering 13 children with her) was beating her regularly and now was beating the older boys with steel rods
- rats biting the little ones as they slept at night (their backs were covered with rat bites)
- as she only had a grade 2 education she was and felt totally incapable of helping her children with their homework
- she didn’t have issue with this, but I continue to be very concerned about the black mould that completely covers the ceilings that are caving in on the children’s beds. One of Shirley’s concerns was that there is no toilet facility and she and the children continue to “go” just anywhere in their back field.
- her boys (11 and 15) were starting to disrespect her and treat her like the man does and the younger ones were starting to follow

February – March Update:

- her “husband” is working in another town now and only comes home on weekends (beatings continue)
- we bought rat killer and have COMPLETELY gotten rid of all the rats (THANK YOU JESUS)
- black mould continues to grow and their health and lives continue to be in jeopardy
- we purchased an outdoor pit latrine and they dug a hole and now have a place to go to the bathroom, in privacy and safety
- boys have taken a turn for the worst and have been caught stealing, have been arrested, charged and have escaped from jail and are on the run and afraid. Neighbors are taking things in to their own hands, beating the boys when caught, threatening Sarah and the children … things are out of control and an email last Monday said that the family was about to collapse

April update:

- things fell apart last week and the whole family was in grave danger from the neighbors and police
- an angel provided funds to start clearing land on Canaan for the family to move. The boys (who were found and refuse to go back to school) went out to the land with Sarah and helped to clear the land. Fencing is going in this week. We have purchased a temporary trailer home for them to live in while the same angel has provided funds to build them a simple home on the land
- the boys will work on the farm until January when they will start in a new school with a fresh start
- the girls will go to a local school and Jabulani will drive them to and from the bus stop every day
- Jabulani and an American volunteer have taken this family under their wing and will stand with them, mentor them, teach them and teach them about Jesus and His love for them and His plan for their lives.
- once everyone is settled the plan is for Sarah to work on the farm and earn an income to pay for food and school fees. No alcohol is allowed on the property so this may/will be a challenge for her in the early days as she deals with her own demons during the transition. She has been pregnant since she was 13 years old, is uneducated and has been hopeless, until now (we hope). We are hopeful … and eternally optimistic.

This transition is filled with complication and risk. From fires being started, to theft to snake bites to rebellion, the list goes on, and so that is why I am emailing you today. We need this family covered in prayer in a big way. They are the front line battlefield and represent the children of Africa, the poverty of Africa and the very ones whom God has called us to serve. Will you commit to praying for this family and to the entire team who are there to stand with them and beside them?

May I say how desperately thankful I am to the family who has provided the funds to begin building this family a home – building a hopeful future for Sarah and her children. But there are additional costs that we need support for. Funds raised will be used to supplement food, school fees, new school uniforms and shoes for the new school, transportation cost to and from the bus every day, medical support and the funds to set up a home (new mattresses are needed), large cooking pots, water tank, utensils, etc. while Sarah is getting settled and adjusted. If you would like to help, or continue helping provide hope for this Swazi family please give today: http://www.heartforafrica.org/9sw102.aspx

This has been a long five year journey, but the lessons that I have personally learned have been invaluable. I pray that the Lord didn’t allow this family to stay in this danger and situation just for me to learn. Jesus help us all to draw closer to you, to listen to your voice, learn quickly, move into action and not waste another day.

First children’s home on Canaan – thank you Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Who would have thought that there would be a spark lit in Cape Girardeau, Missouri that would ignite an entire fire around the nation to bring hope to hopeless children in Swaziland?  It’s true. On Thursday I head out to meet a fearless, tireless team of people lead by Teresa Birk, Raelenna Ferguson, Chris Edmonds and Randy Sparkman (among dozens of others), who are hosting CELEBRATE HOPE on Saturday, February 27th at a place called THE VENUE.

These people aren’t ordinary people, well, technically they are, but in truth they are super heroes. Take Teresa Birk for example; a woman who traveled with Heart for Africa in July 2009, only to return home to have her two year old son, Jared, leave her to be with Jesus days after her return.  How do you go on each day after losing a child?  How do you get out of bed?  How do you continue to believe in a God who loves and cares when He allowed your baby to die?

Teresa, and her wonderful husband and son, have taken one breath a time, one minute at a time, one hour at a time and one day at at time. Each step is a step of healing and faith and pain and joy.

Isaiah 30:19-21

19 O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you. 20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

On Saturday night this team will continue their great efforts to raise $100,000 for the very first children’s home on Project Canaan (www.heartforafrica.org/projectcanaan).  The plan is that this first building will be a home for abandoned babies and will be dedicated in memory of Jared Birk on Saturday, July 24th, 2010.

This spark has lit a flame that is burning like wildfire – a wild fire of hope for the children of Swaziland, for the Birk family and for us all.

I stand in awe at His provision, His goodness and His mercy.

Is it okay with you…

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Have you ever done something that you swore you would NEVER do?  That is where I find myself typing this blog entry.  Who has time to read a blog?  Who would care enough to read my blog?  Maybe no-one.  But then I saw the movie “Julie & Julia”, which was fun, quirky and in a strange way inspirational.  I found myself wanting to make Duck a L’orange and fly of to Paris to become a chef.

I don’t assume you will have the same response reading my blog, but maybe, just maybe you will want to start making a difference in the life of a five year old in Africa or even fly off to Kenya or Swaziland to bring hope to a nation!  Have you ever sworn that you would NEVER to those things?

I remember when It’s Not Okay With Me was about to be printed.  I had monkeys flying around in my stomach.  It was a book that I didn’t want to write and really, really didn’t want anyone to read. It was too raw, too painful, too embarrassing and I feared a backlash from readers.

Happily I don’t have that same trepidation when I was told that the new book Is It Okay With You? was shipped and is ready to send out to all of you who pre-ordered it (yes, there were a few more than just my mom!).  As the saying goes –“your book is in the mail”.  I hope you all enjoy it.
